Life in rural Cote d'Ivoire--very much like life in many third world settings--is hard. The country's economy is failing due to on-going civil strife. Her infrastructure is non-existent.

The inhabitants of the north-eastern corner of what was once the jewel of West Africa are a simple people. They do not require much to live. They also do not expect much help--as little assistance has been theirs over the ages.

  • "Too far gone...besides, she's a girl..." was the assessment of the triage orderly of the little bush hospital. When nurses with Hanna Project found this young teenaged girl--her arm completely rotted through at the elbow from infection--she was very close to death. With massive doses of antibiotics, oral iron supplements (she was so anemic that her HCT did not even register in the lab, and there are no facilities for blood transfusion in the north of Cote d'Ivoire) and an amputation, within two weeks, she walked out of the hospital on her own.

  • A young mother makes a call on her cell phone to inform her husband that the visiting American doctors can do nothing for their baby. Mother's concern is that her infant's head is so large that she cannot sit up. It is a condition that is treatable with chemotherapy in areas of the world where that is available...unfortunately, this section of Cote d'Ivoire is not one of those areas.   • Every year since 2008, this mother returns when the doctors and nurses of Hanna Project come to her region. Days walk, she contentedly makes the trek for a five minute conversation with me--she always identifies herself by showing her scar. You see, in 2008, momma almost died from septicemia due to the worst Mastitis I've ever seen; and her newborn was hours away from death. Both were treated and both survived. She comes back each year to say, "Fahina foree." Thank you. I don't even know her name.

The visiting American doctors and nurses are leaving this day, returning to their homes far away...but they say they will come back in a year.
