  • While handing out supplies at a small village school, it was noticed that there were many children standing or playing around outside of the school, some of whom were even peeking into the one room school through the mud brick windows. The explanation given was that the children who were outside were not students. Their families could not afford to send them to school--with either the actual cost of schooling being prohibitive, or the cost to the family being too great a sacrifice if the child attended school instead of working in the fields.   • Awaiting his second of several surgeries at the Doropo Hospital (in the north-east corner of Cote d'Ivoire), this young boy's face speaks his hope outloud as he bides his time before his turn.   • This very lively (rowdy) group of children gathered at the hospital gates at every chance they could find to call out to the Americans who were working there in a two week medical clinic. "Candy! Candy!" was their frequent refrain as the doctors and nurses passed back and forth on their way to and from surgery.
