My Story
I can only tell my story.
The May 2010 flood, that muddy, foul disaster, engulfed my family, my friends, my church and my neighbors. It stole days and weeks and months of their lives. It desecrated bronzed baby booties, children's toys, wedding albums. It scattered clothing and Christmas ornaments hither and yon. It swallowed businesses and schools. It strained relationships and it even snatched lives.
On a personal--and sometimes more frivolous--level, the flood of May 2010 seriously damaged many of my favorite places to shop; "my" bookstore and coffee shop; my children's school; the children's department of my home church; my favorite spot to shoot portraits; the Italian restaurant where my husband and I ate on our anniversary. Even the place where my family and I have our eyeglass prescriptions filled sat in dirty for days, contaminated river water.
I thank God that my home was spared. Because of this mercy, my family and I were free to pour ourselves into the needs of those within our circle, helping with whatever was needed--and always, always with a camera on my shoulder to document times we thought we'd never forget.
Though I think of this as my story, in reality, it is their story. It is the story of those who graciously took time out of long, hard days so as to share their at-times-overwhelming struggle with me, both in words and in their acceptance of my ever-present camera.
This story--our story--is not just one of devastation and destruction, of ruin and loss. It is a tapestry which has evolved into an encouraging tale of human resolve and resilience in the face of difficult circumstances.
It is a story of RECOVERY...and it is a story which has yet to come to a close.
